What I Look For When Interviewing
I was asked by two people that I was interviewing recently what I look for in people.
Here is the answer I gave:
- Curiosity for crypto.
I'd like anyone we hire to have a genuine curiosity for crypto. They don't need to be an expert. They can be skeptical. But they must at least find it interesting and see the potential for it to have a positive impact on the world.
Sometimes we deviated from this in the past and hired people who didn't have a genuine interest in crypto. Those people never ended up working out. - Truthfulness.
One of our core values is radical transparency. On our website this is phrased as "We are committed to understanding reality as it really is." So I look for people who are truthful. Who, when they are asked a question they don't know the answer to, treat this as an invitation to explore and learn. Express something that is true.
The contrast here are people who are more concerned about creating an impression. Who adapt what they express based on what they think is expected. - Self-reflection.
I look for people who understand themselves well. Who think about who they are and why they are that way and how they might want to change. Who question themselves and look inward. Without self-reflection, it's hard to evolve and grow. - Interest in their own work.
I also look for people who have a deep interest in their own work. Who treat their work a bit like a craftsperson. As something to be honed over time. Who strive for some kind of excellence and take pride in doing their best. Who see the pursuit of excellence in their work as a way to express themselves fully. - Clarity.
I look for people who have clarity. Who can express ideas clearly and relatively succinctly.
